Activity
Hiking & Snowshoeing
Ascend to some of the best vantage points, stretch the legs and take in the spectacular scenery
Setting foot on land in otherwise inaccessible places is an essential part of expedition travel. Landings are included with all expedition cruises and for those wanting to explore beyond the more frequented areas, hikes or snowshoe walks are great activities.
Snowshoe walks in Antarctica
Snowshoe walks provide a unique and immersive way to explore the pristine landscapes of the polar regions, especially in Antarctica. The snowshoes will be provided by the expedition team and fit onto your expedition boots. Snowshoeing provides access to areas that may be challenging to reach on foot. Participants can explore ice-covered landscapes, traverse snowfields, and enjoy panoramic views of the Antarctic scenery. Snowshoeing offers you a chance to enjoy the solitude of the polar environment. You don’t need any experience to participate.
Shore hikes and walks
Shore hikes are a great way to explore the nature and landscape from up close. The walks might take you over spongy tundra, crusty snow, sandy beaches and to the top of lookouts. The outings are usually offered at different activity levels, ranging from a leisurely pace to strenuous hikes. The hikes may last from two to three hours with plenty of time for photography, learning moments, or just time to stand back and enjoy the incredible surroundings. All hikes are led and supervised by experienced expedition guides.
Expedition cruises to the Arctic and Antarctica often include opportunities for guided snowshoeing excursions and hikes, providing a well-rounded experience.

FAQ
While snowshoeing is generally considered a moderate physical activity, participants should be in good health and prepared for walking in various weather conditions.
The type and length of the hikes depends a lot on the destination and specific landing site. The expedition team will decide what is the best location for a hike keeping the weather and the available time in mind. It is not always possible to go for walks or hikes on every landing. Sometimes, there might be too much wildlife around, or the terrain is simply not suited for walking on.
If you are looking for an expedition with lots of opportunites for hiking, please contact us directly. Some expeditions might be more suited than others.
In the Arctic and Antarctic, it’s not allowed to go on hikes or walks by yourself. You will always be accompanied by one of the expedition guides. We prioritize responsible tourism practices to minimize the impact on the fragile polar regions. Visitors are expected to follow guidelines to protect the environment and wildlife.
