Polar Snorkeling
Explore the hidden under water wonders of our polar regions
Back in 2010, we invented a great new activity: Polar Snorkeling. Especially designed for travelers who have no diving experience but do want to discover the underwater world of Antarctica and the Arctic. Together with our partner Waterproof International in Sweden, we developed a comfortable Polar Snorkeling Drysuit which we first tested during our expeditions to Antarctica. It soon became clear that this is a fantastic activity for anyone who can swim and wants to explore the polar oceans.
Easy and fun for everyone!
We believe expeditions to the polar regions should include more than viewing the scenery and animals above the ice. Imagine floating in the cold polar water around Antarctica and watching penguins shoot through the water. Or swimming in the deep fjords of Norway with orca’s and humpback whales only a few meters away. Snorkeling allows you to see the beauty of a destination both above and below the water. It’s our passion to share this with our guests. Over the years, we’ve developed various types of snorkeling trips. From dedicated snorkeling expeditions where the main focus is to go snorkeling every day, to snorkeling excursions during an expedition cruise. Besides Polar Snorkeling, we also offer snorkeling trips to warmer places like Tonga, where you can swim with humpback whales in warm tropical waters.
Dedicated Polar Snorkeling Expeditions
During our dedicated snorkeling expeditions in Northern Norway, we will try to go snorkeling whales and orcas every day. The guides are constantly on the lookout for wildlife. When they spot a good opportunity, everybody puts on their snorkeling gear to go in the water. Our experts will provide snorkelers with professional support and clear procedures for a safe snorkeling experience. They will also make sure all snorkelers keep a safe distance to avoid disturbing the animals.
Special Waterproof® Polar Snorkeling Package
For Snorkeling during our Winter Whales of Norway Expeditions we provide you with a Waterproof® polar snorkeling drysuit and snorkeling equipment. When we go snorkeling, we might stay out on the water for several hours. The specially designed drysuit will keep you warm and also makes you float on the water. In addition to the included snorkeling package, you can rent our thermal overalls, to keep you extra warm and comfortable.
Add-on Polar Snorkeling Activity
Besides our dedicated snorkeling trips, we also offer selected expedition cruises with snorkeling as an ad-on activity. The aim is to go snorkeling a few times and join the regular excursoins on other days of your voyage. Experience is not needed, and equipment will be provided to you on board. This is an optional activity which is offered on selected expedition cruises only, for example on some voyages to Antarctica. By signing up for the Polar Snorkeling activity, you will enjoy the opportunity to snorkel in places where hardly anyone has ever had a look below the surface of the water.

FAQ
On board our dedicated polar snorkeling expeditions in Northern Norway, we provide high quality polar snorkeling equipment from our partner Waterproof International in Sweden. These items have been specially designed for snorkeling in cold water:
Waterproof D9X Snorkel Drysuit
Our snorkeling drysuits are made of a a breathable ultra-light fabric with a front zipper and latex seals for the neck and wrists. The air trapped withing the suit will allow you to float easily on the surface.
Waterproof High Visibility Hood
Our High Visibility Hoods feature a bright orange coloured surface with reflective patches for ultimate visibility in choppy seas and low light conditions. They also offer double layered protection in critical heat loss areas and glide skin seals for the neck and face.
Waterproof 7 mm G1 Mittens
Our 3-finger semi-dry gloves feature taped seams, glide skin interior for easy donning and doffing as well as providing a quick-drying surface. The gloves are part of Waterproof’s ‘Polar Evoluted’ series. These items have been tried and tested in the polar regions.
Waterproof B5 Marine Boots
The neoprene boots are a sturdy rubber reinforced soft boot with adjustable straps and a special ‘fin strap stopper’ to prevent your fins from slipping off.
Fins, Snorkel and Mask
On board we also provide snorkels, masks and fins, however we recommend bringing your own mask if you own one.
We can provide you with thermal overalls, especially designed to wear underneath your snorkeling drysuit.
Thermal overall undergarments – € 80 per person per trip (at time of booking)
Our overalls have been specially desiged to wear directly over your base layer and to keep you warm while snorkeling in cold water. They can also be worn as a wind proof outer layer for example while you are outside on deck or during an excursion on land. They are very comfortable and easy to put on. Renting our overalls also minimises your packing weight since you don’t have to bring extra layers of warm clothing yourself.
Note, If you have rented thermall overalls at the time of booking, these will be the same size as your drysuit. If you have not rented a thermal undergarment in advance, the rental price on board is Euro 100.
If you decide not to rent our thermal overalls, you will need to bring sufficient layers of clothing to wear under your drysuit in order to stay warm in the polar water.
We advise bringing the following items:
- Ski socks, preferably wool
- Thermal underwear
- Warm pants to put on over your thermal underwear layer (e.g. ski pants)
- Fleece or wool sweater, if you get cold quickly wear two sweaters.
- Warm comfortable jacket to put over your sweater, e.g. a ski jacket
Some tips from Padi Ambassador & Waterproof Expedition leader Birgitta Mueck:
“To dress well is important. What I mean with dressing well is to be proper equipped for the adventure you are about to face. If not having the appropriate clothing when out on an expedition, the most amazing experience could instead pass through as miserable suffering or even be dangerous. For Polar Snorkeling, I usually dress in three layers. The first one is a normal thin base layer in either synthetic or merino wool. My second layer is a thicker thermal underclothing. On top of that, a cozy compressible fiber overall which is comfortable to wear both during the dive and after, for example the thermal coveralls. Finally I put on my drysuit, hood, gloves and boots. Et voilà, we are ready for some cold water-fun!”
If you want to participate in the Polar Snorkeling activity, we advise you to get some snorkeling experience before departue. However, you don’t need any (scuba) diving experience. Polar snorkelling is fun, fascinating and easy to do. An exciting activity for everybody interested in the fascinating scenery below the surface of the polar waters.
Polar snorkeling is accessible for guests from 16 years upwards but only when a drysuit is available in their size. Please note that we have a limited range of sizes on board. Extreme sizes are not available. Please refer to our size chart for details.
Do you have bad eyesight? It’s not possible to wear your glasses underneath your snorkel mask. We advise you to wear contact lenses or use prescription goggles.
Please note that we have a limited range of drysuit sizes on board. If you believe our sizes will not fit you, we advise you to bring your own drysuit and undergarment.
