Originally built in 1976 as a Norwegian weather station vessel, Polarfront was designed to operate safely in some of the world’s harshest maritime environments. After more than 30 years of service, she was transformed into an exclusive Arctic expedition ship, combining proven seafaring capabilities with modern comfort. Following an extensive refurbishment in 2018, Polarfront offers a refined and welcoming atmosphere for adventurous travellers. Her advanced stabilisation system, uncommon on a vessel of this size, minimises rolling and ensures a remarkably smooth and comfortable journey, allowing guests to fully enjoy their Arctic experience.
Polarfront Retrofit
As part of an ongoing commitment to reducing environmental impact, Polarfront underwent a major retrofit in 2024. State of the art technologies were installed to modernise the vessel’s propulsion and power systems, improving fuel efficiency, enhancing navigational safety, and reducing overall emissions.
The retrofit has transformed Polarfront into one of the most efficient small expedition vessels operating in the Arctic, reducing fuel consumption by up to 35%, with annual CO₂ savings equivalent to the carbon absorption of approximately 17,500 trees.
Significant noise reduction measures were also implemented. These upgrades allow guests to experience the remote Arctic in greater comfort, with less disturbance from engines and generators, creating a more immersive connection with the surrounding environment.
Minimising the environmental impact
Reducing underwater and onboard noise was a key objective of the retrofit. A quieter vessel not only enhances the guest experience but also helps minimise disturbance to Arctic wildlife. Marine mammals, in particular, are highly sensitive to underwater noise, making these improvements an important step towards more sustainable operations in fragile polar ecosystems.
Combined with her warm atmosphere, excellent service, and exceptional expedition capabilities, Polarfront now sets a new standard for small-ship exploration, offering guests a quieter, more comfortable, and more environmentally conscious way to experience the Arctic.

Accommodation
In total, there are 8 spacious twin suites on board, offering room for a maximum of 16 persons. Single travellers can book a shared cabin on request. All suites are situated on the lower deck and all have at least 2 porthole windows. The rooms are spacious and each has their own comfortable bathroom with shower. You’ll also find a hair dryer, bathrobes and bathroom products.
