Emperor Penguins

Antarctica in itself is a wonderful place to visit, but when paired with the opportunity to see Emperor Penguins, there is nothing like it! The largest penguin on the planet has amazing adaptations to the harsh Antarctica climate and has a remarkable life out on the ice. 

During expedition cruises to the Antarctic Peninsula, travelers most likely get to see Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adélie penguins. Although we occasionally spot individual Emperor Penguins, such encounters are quite rare. Expeditions that venture to specific regions such as the Weddell Sea, the southwestern part of the Antarctic Peninsula or the interior of the Antarctic continent, offer a much higher chance of seeing Emperor Penguins. Of course, wildlife is never guaranteed, but passengers and staff alike will keep their eyes glued to the water in hopes to see these majestic birds.

Emperor Penguin Habitat

One reason Emperor Penguins are more difficult to find lies in their habitat. Their colonies are typically located farther inland, often in remote and hard-to-access areas. Colony sizes can vary significantly, ranging from a few hundred individuals to tens of thousands. These colonies are usually established on fast ice, which keeps them relatively fixed in place. Although scientists generally know the locations of the colonies, reaching them remains a challenge.

Visiting an Emperor Penguin colony

If visiting an Emperor Penguin colony is your primary goal when traveling to Antarctica, there are three main ways to access them. First, when traveling by expedition ship, some colonies can be reached via an additional helicopter flight. Second, a specialised icebreaking ship can take you closer to shore, potentially bringing travellers within range of the colonies. Third, you can opt for a land-based expedition on the Antarctic continent, with an additional flight to the Emperor Penguin colony at Gould Bay.

• Can be seen along the Antarctic Peninsula
• Occasional sightings
• Often juveniles out exploring
• Not necessarily ‘lost’ but they are outside of the ‘normal’ habitat range

• Found in the Weddell Sea
• Chicks and parents huddled in aggregations
• More limited to large flat pieces of ice
• Accessible via icebreaker, helicopters or land-based expedition

Emperor Penguin Life Cycle

Emperor Penguins have some of the most recognizable chicks for any penguin species. These grey, fluffy chicks hatch at around 315 grams and have quite a long rearing period. In the Antartic summer, expeditions to see the Emperor Penguins normally occur towards the end of the long four-month crèche period, into the brief fledgling month, and sometimes into the beginning of the moulting stage.

Surviving Antarctic Winters

A feat of itself is surviving the winter in one of the harshest environments on the planet! Emperor Penguins are well prepared for this given their dense feather insulation, but survival also depends on their habit of huddling in massive groups. This creates warmth between one another and if Emperor Penguins could offer advice on how to survive a winter in Antarctic, they would probably say: it takes teamwork!
