Kayaking
Enjoy the silence while paddling through the cold water
Kayaking is an exciting and fun activity, during which you get to experience the nature up close and glide through the waters surrounded by the most spectacular scenery. You might also see some wildlife from sea birds to whales during your paddle through the icy waters.
Polar Kayaking
Kayaking is offered as an optional activity on many ships during expeditions to the Polar regions; Arctic and Antarctic. It is offered in small groups with like minded, adventurous travelers and under supervision of experienced kayaking guides, who will ensure your safety during the activity. In order to participate, you are required to have some previous kayaking experience and we recommend that you practice in regular surroundings beforehand if it has been a while since your last time. In some locations, more experience might be required, and therefore it is important that you take part according your own skill set.
Depending on your expedition ship and itinerary, kayaking is offered either as one time outing or as a program with multiple opportunities for kayaking during your expedition. In order to participate, you are required to take part in all of the safety briefings and guidance given by your kayak master.
Let’s paddle!
Each kayaking session duration is normally approximately two to four hours, but will be determined for example based on the current weather conditions. Depending on the location, the activity might start from the ship or you might first have a zodiac cruise to the shore to start from there. The scenery you are paddling in might be anything from rugged shorelines to gliding through ice floats and crystal clear waters.
What’s included?
You are provided with all the kayaking equipment, including:
- Kayak & paddle
- Dry suit and neoprene booties
- Life vest and other safety items
What should you bring?
Under your dry suit, we recommend you to dress in layers to effectively keep yourself warm: create a foundation layer that leads moisture away and keeps your body warm, a mid layer that traps body heat and insulates, and a waterproof outer layer that allows the body to breathe but also protects you from strong winds. The previous applies to general dressing up recommendations to the Polar regions, and therefore you can utilize many of the same clothing you will also wear otherwise. We recommend the following for kayaking:
- Thermal underwear top and bottom (synthetic or wool, no cotton)
- A fleece jacket or vest to wear over your thermal underwear
- Leisure pants for added warmth
- Warm (fleece) hat
- Thick wool socks
- Waterproof or neoprene gloves
- Neckwarmer/Buff
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen / sun block
