Paradijs voor natuurliefhebbers en avonturiers.
South Georgia ligt in het zuiden van de Atlantische Oceaan. Het is een afgelegen en onherbergzaam eiland zonder vaste bewoners en de enige manier om er te komen is met een expeditieschip. Slechts een paar duizend bezoekers komen hier elk jaar tijdens het zomerseizoen, vaak gecombineerd met een bezoek aan de Falklandeilanden en Antarctica.

South Georgia is ongerept en heeft adembenemend landschappen. De kust bestaat uit stijle rotswanden, afgewisseld met gletsjervalleien. Op de plekken waar je aan land kunt gaan staan de stranden vol met duizenden koningspinguïns. De geuren en geluiden van zo’n eindeloze kolonie pinguïns zijn onbeschrijfelijk. Maar je kunt hier nog veel meer unieke dieren tegenkomen. De pinguïns moeten hun stranden delen met enorme zeeolifanten, pelsrobben en verschillende andere kleinere pinguïnsoorten. Langs de kust kun je walvissen zien en hoog op de heuvels maken grote albatrossen hun nest. Vele vogelsoorten, zoals sneeuwstormvogels en Antarctische Sterns, hebben het eiland als hun thuis gekozen. South Georgia is een paradijs voor vogelspotters.
Geschiedenis van South Georgia
South Georgia heeft een korte maar turbulente geschiedenis als centrum voor walvisvangst en tussenstop voor ontdekkingsreizigers. Langs de kust vind je diverse historische plekken, waaronder het graf van ontdekkingsreiziger Sir Ernest Shackleton in Grytviken. Dit voormalige walvisstation, gesticht in 1904 door Noorse walvisvaarders, was een van de meest actieve op het Zuidelijk Halfrond. Tegenwoordig is de plek verlaten en dient als museum ter herinnering aan het donkere industriële verleden van het eiland.
Tijdens sommige expedities is het mogelijk om, mits de weersomstandigheden het toelaten, in de voetsporen van Shackleton te treden. Je kunt de route volgen die hij en zijn mannen namen tijdens hun beroemde reddingsmissie in 1916. Een uitdagende trektocht die je langs enkele van de meest spectaculaire uitzichtpunten op South Georgia brengt.

Wildlife South Georgia
South Georgia is een paradijs voor wilde dieren, met een ongelooflijke diversiteit aan soorten:
- Pinguïns: Koningspinguïns, Gentoo-, Macaroni- en Kinbandpinguïns.
- Zeehonden: Zeeolifanten en Antarctische Pelsrobben.
- Vogels: Grijskopalbatros, Grote Albatros, Roetkopalbatros, Wenkbrauwalbatros, Antarctische Stormvogel, Zuidpooljager, South Georgia pipit en de South Georgia pintail.
- Walvissen: Bultruggen, Zuidkapers en Blauwe Vinvissen.
Vogelgriep South Georgia
In Oktober 2023 werden de eerste gevallen van vogelgriep bevestigd in South Georgia. Bestaande procedures, waaronder dagelijkse bioveiligheid checks en het bewaren van een minimale afstand tot wilde dieren, zijn een essentieel onderdeel van de bescherming van South Georgia. Nu de vogelgriep in de regio is bevestigd worden er extra eisen gesteld aan bezoekers om te voorkomen dat vogelgriep wordt binnengebracht en verspreid.
Vogelgriepprotocol South Georgia
Zorg ervoor dat alles wat in contact kan komen met de omgeving, zoals kleding en uitrusting, grondig wordt gereinigd voordat je thuis vertrekt. Tijdens je expeditie in Souht Georgia is het verplicht dat je:

● Altijd minstens 5m afstand tot dieren houdt

Voorafgaand aan elke landing in South Georgia en Antarctica controleren de Expeditieleiders de locatie op tekenen van ziekte. Zolang er geen tekenen van vogelgriep zijn, en de gasten op veilige afstand van de dieren kunnen blijven, kunnen de landingen doorgaan. Tijdens het seizoen wordt de situatie goed in de gaten gehouden, wat er toe kan leiden dat bepaalde locaties alsnog worden gesloten. Het Expeditieteam zal altijd hun uiterste best doen om een alternatief te vinden en op een veilige manier de best mogelijke ervaring te bieden.
