Wat is er te zien op de Falklandeilanden?
De eilanden zijn een paradijs voor natuur- en vogelliefhebbers. Op de Falklandeilanden leven meer dan 200 interessante en zeldzame vogelsoorten, waaronder vijf verschillende pinguïns (ezelspinguïn, koningspinguïn, macaronipinguïn, magelhaenpinguïn en rotspinguïn). Deze vogels nestelen tussen bijzondere planten en bloemen die een prachtig landschap creëren. Op de eilanden broeden verschillende soorten zeehonden en zeeleeuwen en als je geluk hebt, kom je in de wateren rond de Falklandeilanden zelfs walvissen tegen. Weer Falklandeilanden
De Falklandeilanden (Islas Malvinas) liggen ten noorden van Ushuaia en de Convergentiezone, wat betekent dat men bij aankomst waarschijnlijk een temperatuurstijging zal ervaren.
- In de zomermaanden kunnen de temperaturen oplopen tot 20°C, maar gemiddeld ligt de temperatuur rond de 10°C.
- De eilandengroep kan te maken krijgen met sterke wind en er valt doorgaans meer neerslag op de oostelijke eilanden dan op de westelijke eilanden.
Wildlife Falklandeilanden
Thuisbasis van ongelooflijke mariene en terrestrische fauna
Met meer dan 466.000 km² oceaan, variërend van grote dieptes tot aan het continentale plateau, wemelen de wateren rond de Falkland-archipel van het zeeleven. De Falklandstroom voert koudere Antarctische wateren naar warmere Atlantische wateren, waardoor een hotspot van opwelling en een productief voedselrijk gebied ontstaat. In deze wateren zijn meer dan 20 soorten walvisachtigen en drie soorten vinpotigen waargenomen.
Dit zeer productieve gebied ondersteunt niet alleen het zeeleven, maar ook het landleven. Met meer dan 700 eilanden en een landoppervlakte van 12.000 km² creëren het gevarieerde landschap en de koele temperaturen een perfect ecosysteem voor landfauna- en flora. Met 180 inheemse vaatplanten, 250 insectensoorten en meer dan 220 geregistreerde vogelsoorten zijn de Falklandeilanden een geweldige bestemming voor vogelliefhebbers.
Zeeluipaarden: Deze krachtige roofdieren zijn vaak alleen te zien wanneer ze uitrusten op het strand.
Zuidelijke zeeleeuw: Wijdverspreid en geven de voorkeur aan stranden met Tussac-gras.
Zuid-Amerikaanse pelsrob: Wordt vaak gezien op rotsachtige uitsteeksels op de buitenste eilanden.
Walvissen en dolfijnen: Thuisbasis van een groot aantal walvisachtigen, zowel trekvogels als standpopulaties. Tot de walvissen behoren: seiwalvissen, vinvissen, zuidkapers en bultruggen. De energieke dolfijnsoorten zijn: Peale’s dolfijn, Commerson’s dolfijn, orka’s en donkergestreepte dolfijnen.
Pinguïns: Er zijn 5 soorten te zien: koningspinguïn, rotspinguïn, macaronipinguïn, magelhaenpinguïn en ezelspinguïn.
Oceanische zeevogels: albatrossen, pijlstormvogels en stormvogels.
Andere lokale soorten: 5 ganzensoorten, 2 soorten caracara’s en de endemische, niet-vliegende Falkland-stoomeend.
