Beste tijd om Spitsbergen te bezoeken
Spitsbergen is alleen toegankelijk per schip in het voorjaar en de zomer, van eind april tot begin september. Tijdens de korte zomer zijn de dieren druk bezig met het opslaan van reserves voor de poolwinter. Vossen en rendieren zwerven over de sneeuw- en grashellingen onder de kliffen waar talloze vogels broeden. Langs de rand van het pakijs en langs de kusten kun je walvissen en zeehonden zien foerageren en we zullen goed uitkijken naar kolonies walrussen.
Vroeg in het seizoen is er nog veel sneeuw en ijs te vinden in Spitsbergen. Zeehondenjongen gaan dan op verkenning terwijl hongerige ijsberen op zoek zijn naar voedsel. Vogels komen vanuit het zuiden aan om hun nesten te maken, en walvissen keren terug naar het Noordpoolgebied. Er is 24 uur per dag licht, wat je genoeg tijd geeft om de prachtige natuur te ontdekken en te fotograferen. Later in het seizoen is veel van de sneeuw en het ijs gesmolten, waardoor de fjorden open komen te liggen en beter toegankelijk worden. Ten noorden en oosten van Spitsbergen zal het drijfijs beginnen op te breken, wat kansen biedt om rondom de hele Spitsbergen archipel te varen.
Over het algemeen begint je expeditiecruise naar Spitsbergen in de hoofdstad Longyearbyen, de meest noordelijke stad ter wereld. In dit kleine Arctische stadje hebben de straten geen namen en kom je regelmatig rendieren tegen die de weg oversteken. Maar ook ijsberen zijn nooit ver weg. Daarom mag je Longyearbyen niet verlaten zonder een gids die een geweer draagt. Weer Spitsbergen
Spitsbergen heeft voornamelijk te maken met een poolklimaat, waarbij het grootste deel van de landmassa wordt bedekt door een ijskap. Deze ijskap heeft een grote invloed op het klimaat van het eiland. Expeditiecruises naar Spitsbergen vinden plaats van eind april tot begin september, wanneer de Middernachtzon de dag verlicht en de temperaturen net boven het vriespunt klimmen.
- Lente: Als je in het vroege voorjaar reist, vind je een vrijwel ongerept landschap met veel sneeuw en zee-ijs. Hoewel je door het ijs bepaalde plekken misschien niet kunt bereiken, biedt het ongerepte Arctische landschap ongelooflijke fotografische mogelijkheden.
- Zomer: Naarmate de zomer vordert, wordt de natuur in Spitsbergen actiever en verandert het landschap langzaam. De toendra heeft een verrassend rijke vegetatie, die goed gedijt op beschutte plekken. Het stimuleert een breed scala aan kleine bloemen, waardoor het dorre landschap verandert in een prachtig landschap.
De Middernachtzon en poolnachten
Door de ligging binnen de Poolcirkel kent Spitsbergen in de zomer het fenomeen van de Middernachtzon, waarbij de zon enkele weken niet ondergaat. Omgekeerd zijn er in de winter poolnachten waarin de zon voor langere tijd niet opkomt.
Kust- vs. binnenklimaat van Spitsbergen
De grootte en topografie van Spitsbergen zorgen ervoor dat het klimaat niet uniform is:
- Kustgebieden: Gematigd door de Noord-Atlantische stroming hebben kustgebieden, vooral in het zuiden en westen, mildere winters en koelere zomers in vergelijking met het binnenland. Er valt ook meer neerslag en in de zomer kan het af en toe regenen.
- Gebieden in het binnenland: Het ijs en de noordelijke ligging van Spitsbergen maken het binnenland veel kouder. Het is ook droger, met minimale neerslag.
Wildlife Spitsbergen
Ondanks het harde klimaat herbergt Spitsbergen een grote verscheidenheid aan wilde dieren die zich hebben aangepast aan de extreme poolomstandigheden. Als het lente wordt, veranderen de kliffen langs de kust in levendige zeevogelkolonies. Miljoenen trekvogels, zoals kleine alken, noordse sternen en noordse stormvogels, komen naar Spitsbergen om een partner te vinden, eieren te leggen en hun kuikens groot te brengen. Ze trekken poolvossen aan die altijd op jacht zijn naar een kuiken of ei dat door de ouders alleen is gelaten. Op de toendra kun je rendieren zien. Door de smeltende sneeuw kunnen ze grazen op de blootliggende stukken vegetatie. Je kunt ook walrussen of zeehonden zien die een dutje doen op het pakijs, terwijl je altijd op zoek bent naar ijsberen. Tegen het einde van het zomerseizoen is Spitsbergen op zijn kleurrijkst. De toendra op Spitsbergen heeft een verrassend rijke vegetatie, die goed gedijt op beschutte plekken.
