De geografische Noordpool of aardse Noordpool is het punt op het noordelijk halfrond waar de draaias van de aarde het aardoppervlak raakt. Eeuwenlang probeerden avonturiers en ontdekkingsreizigers de top van de wereld te bereiken met sleeën, schepen en zelfs vliegtuigen. Tot 1926 werden ze allemaal verslagen door de harde realiteit van het Arctische klimaat. En zelfs vandaag de dag is het bereiken van de Noordpool een moeilijke en uitdagende reis. Slechts een selecte groep haalt het elk jaar.
De Noordpool is het meest noordelijke punt op aarde en ligt diametraal tegenover de Zuidpool. En terwijl de Zuidpool op een continentale landmassa ligt, bevindt de Noordpool zich midden in de Noordelijke IJszee te midden van water dat bijna permanent bedekt is met voortdurend verschuivend zee-ijs. De enige mogelijkheid om het meest noordelijke punt van onze planeet te bereiken is aan boord van een ijsbreker die sterk genoeg is om door de dikke laag zee-ijs te duwen.
