Wildlife Antarctica
Als je Antarctica bezoekt tijdens een expeditiecruise zal je waarschijnlijk verschillende soorten pinguïns, zeehonden, walvissen en veel zeevogels tegenkomen. Vooral midden in de Antarctische zomer zijn veel pooldieren aan het broeden en hun jongen aan het grootbrengen. De voedselrijke Zuidelijke Oceaan van Antarctica is een zeer belangrijke voedingsbodem voor veel diersoorten. Van eind november tot begin maart bevordert het zonlicht de groei van fytoplankton, dat de basis vormt van de mariene voedselketen. Deze overvloed aan fytoplankton trekt krill aan, kleine garnaalachtige schaaldieren, die op hun beurt weer een belangrijke voedselbron vormen voor verschillende walvissoorten, pinguïns en zeehonden.
Over het algemeen bieden de zomermaanden optimale omstandigheden voor wilde dieren op Antarctica, met een overvloed aan voedsel, geschikte temperaturen en langere daglichturen om zich te voeden, voort te planten en andere essentiële activiteiten in hun levenscyclus uit te voeren. Deze seizoensgebonden migratie is een belangrijk aspect van de ecologische dynamiek in de Zuidelijke Oceaan en draagt bij aan de biodiversiteit en het evenwicht van het Antarctische mariene ecosysteem.
Avian Influenza in Antarctica
In februari 2024 werden de eerste gevallen van vogelgriep bevestigd in Antarctica. De International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO), waar Waterproof Expeditions lid van is, zet zich in voor de bescherming van de regio. IAATO-leden handhaven daarom strikte procedures om de verspreiding van ziekteverwekkers en uitheemse soorten te voorkomen en zijn dit seizoen nog waakzamer. Bestaande protocollen, waaronder dagelijkse bioveiligheidsprocedures en het bewaren van een minimale afstand tot wilde dieren, zijn een essentieel onderdeel van de bescherming van Antarctica. Nu de vogelgriep in de regio is bevestigd worden er extra eisen gesteld aan bezoekers om te voorkomen dat vogelgriep wordt binnengebracht en verspreid.
Vogelgriepprotocol Antarctica
Zorg ervoor dat alles wat in contact kan komen met de Antarctische omgeving, zoals kleding en uitrusting, grondig wordt gereinigd voordat je thuis vertrekt. Tijdens je expeditie in Antarctica is het verplicht dat je:

● Niets op de grond of sneeuw legt
● Altijd minstens 5m afstand tot dieren houdt

Voorafgaand aan elke landing in Antarctica en South Georgia controleren de Expeditieleiders de locatie op tekenen van ziekte. Zolang er geen tekenen van vogelgriep zijn, en de gasten op veilige afstand van de dieren kunnen blijven, kunnen de landingen doorgaan. Tijdens het seizoen wordt de situatie goed in de gaten gehouden, wat er toe kan leiden dat bepaalde locaties alsnog worden gesloten. Het Expeditieteam zal altijd hun uiterste best doen om een alternatief te vinden en op een veilige manier de best mogelijke ervaring te bieden.

De meest gebruikelijke manier om Antarctica te bereiken is aan boord van een expeditieschip dat vertrekt vanuit Zuid-Amerikaanse havens, zoals Ushuaia in Argentinië of Punta Arenas in Chili. Sommige expeditiecruises vertrekken ook vanuit Nieuw-Zeeland of Australië.
De overtocht naar Antarctica duurt ongeveer twee dagen, afhankelijk van het vertrekpunt, het schip, de route en de weersomstandigheden. Reizen gaan meestal naar het Antarctisch schiereiland en de nabijgelegen eilanden.
Een andere optie is om een ‘Fly & Cruise’ expeditie te boeken. Daarbij vliegen reizigers rechtstreeks naar het Antarctisch schiereiland om vervolgens aan boord van een expeditieschip de regio te verkennen. Dit type reizen is ontworpen om de vaak ruige zeestraat Drake Passage comfortabel en snel per vliegtuig over te steken. Zeer interessant voor wie gemakkelijk zeeziek wordt.
De tijd die nodig is om Antarctica te bereiken hangt af van verschillende factoren. Hier zijn enkele algemene richtlijnen:
Vanuit Zuid-Amerika (bijv. Ushuaia, Argentinië of Punta Arenas, Chili):
- Over zee: De meest gebruikelijke manier om Antarctica te bereiken vanuit Zuid-Amerika is per schip. De oversteek van Zuid-Amerika naar Antarctica duurt meestal 2 dagen, afhankelijk van de specifieke route en omstandigheden.
- Per vliegtuig: Een andere manier om Antarctica te bereiken vanuit Zuid-Amerika is door een vlucht te nemen van Punta Arenas, Chili, naar King George Island op het Antarctisch schiereiland. Deze vlucht duurt ongeveer 3 tot 4 uur.
Vanuit Australië of Nieuw-Zeeland:
- Over zee: Sommige expedities vertrekken vanuit Australië of Nieuw-Zeeland. Dit zijn langere zeereizen om de verschillende delen van Antarctica te kunnen bereiken. Dit kan enkele dagen of zelfs langer duren.
- Per vliegtuig: Vluchten van Australië of Nieuw-Zeeland naar Antarctica zijn minder gebruikelijk, maar kunnen geregeld worden voor specifiek onderzoek of logistieke doeleinden. Deze vluchten duren ongeveer 5 tot 6 uur.
Houd er rekening mee dat het reizen naar Antarctica onderhevig is aan weers- en ijsomstandigheden en dat reisschema’s daarop worden aangepast.
De zomer in Antarctica duurt van november tot maart. Het Antarctisch Schiereiland, het deel dat vaak wordt bezocht tijdens expeditiecruises, is de meest toegankelijke regio van het continent. Zomertemperaturen variëren meestal van ongeveer -2°C tot 8°C, relatief mild in vergelijking met het binnenland van Antarctica.
Het is belangrijk om in gedachten te houden dat deze temperaturen dagelijks kunnen wisselen. Bovendien staat Antarctica bekend om zijn sterke en onvoorspelbare wind, die de gevoelstemperatuur aanzienlijk kunnen beïnvloeden. Thermische onderkleding en winddichte bovenkleding zijn essentieel om warm te blijven, vooral tijdens zodiac cruises of buiten aan dek van het schip
Als je Antarctica bezoekt op een expeditiecruise, zul je bijna zeker verschillende pinguïnsoorten tegenkomen, vooral midden in de zomer als ze aan land komen om te broeden en hun kuikens groot te brengen.
Adéliepinguïn – Een van de meest voorkomende pinguïnsoorten in Antarctica.
Ezelspinguïn – Ze broeden op verschillende sub-Antarctische eilanden en het Antarctisch schiereiland zelf.
Kinbandpinguïn – Ze nestelen in kolonies op verschillende Antarctische en sub-Antarctische eilanden.
Macaronipinguïn – Hun primaire broedgebied is de sub-Antarctische eilanden, sommige kolonies zijn te vinden op het Antarctisch schiereiland.
Koningspinguïn – Komt in grote aantallen voor op de sub-Antarctische eilanden zoals South Georgia en de Falklandeilanden.
Keizerspinguïn – De grootste pinguïnsoort, alleen te vinden op het zee-ijs. Ze worden niet vaak gespot.
Er worden regelmatig verschillende soorten walvissen gezien in de wateren rond Antarctica. Tijdens de Antarctische zomer trekken ze hiernaartoe om zich te voeden. Walvissen spotten is een populaire activiteit tijdens expedities naar Antarctica. Zoek een plekje buiten aan dek en speur de horizon af met je verrekijker.
