What to Expect in June in Svalbard
Arctic Spring Season at its Peak!
June in Svalbard is the moment the Arctic truly comes alive. After months of deep winter and a slow, cautious spring, Svalbard awakens into a season of 24-hour daylight, milder weather, and dramatic natural changes. For expedition travellers, June offers some of the best conditions of the entire Arctic season!
Midnight Sun – 24 Hours of Daylight
June offers continuous daylight, creating ideal conditions for long excursions and photography. The midnight sun is at its peak between late April and late August, making June one of the brightest months of the year.
Additionally, here lies a main benefit for small-ship expedition travel. With 24-hour daylight and a flexible itinerary, the opportunistic wildlife sightings are possible at any time of the day! It is not uncommon to have amazing wildlife encounters at midnight, before you sit down for breakfast, or even to be awoken in the middle of your sleep. Of course, our expedition team will check first if you would like to be awoken for such sightings!

Milder Temperatures & Calmer weather
June marks true Arctic spring, with average temperatures ranging from 1°C to 8°C. June’s weather is usually more forgiving and calmer waters allow guests to get close to Svalbard’s glaciers fronts and bird cliffs during zodiac cruises.
Milder temperatures also mean that comfort is increased. Whether that be extended personal warmth on zodiac cruises, soaking in a bit of sunshine on shore hikes, or enjoying your morning coffee on deck with a light refreshing Arctic breeze.
The Landscape Waking Up
Svalbard’s tundra begins its dramatic transformation from a monochrome winter world into a living Arctic garden. Meltwater streams appear, ice cracks, and the ground begins to thaw. The lancscape that looked barren just weeks earlier starts to wake up. Although the peak bloom generally comes in July, June is when you first see the tundra gain colour, perfect for capturing early‑season contrasts.
What makes June magical is the mixture of snow patches, green moss carpets, and pops of colour from early flowers. Witnessing the unraveling of life after a winter of adaptation is unlike anything else!
Glacial rivers
With the return of milder temperatures and 24‑hour sunlight, Svalbard’s glaciers begin to release the first significant flushes of meltwater in June. This is when glacial rivers suddenly appear, carving bright blue channels through the glaciers. Sediment-rich water rushes down into the fjords, often turning the water into a beautiful turquoise colour.
Not only are the glacial rivers stunning to cruise around from the zodiac, they are also instrumental in the Svalbard ecosystem. According to the Norwegian Polar Institute, over 60% of Svalbard’s land is glaciated, there are 153 tide water glaciers, and around 60% of all glaciers terminate in the sea.
This is important from an ecological standpoint because it creates a subglacial drainage system which plays an important role for numerous species. Bird species, such as Kittiwakes, Fulmars, Ivory Gulls, and Arctic Terns, are often found feeding in these areas. Scientists have found that beluga whales spend 55% of their time actively foraging and diving in front of glaciers while taking advantage of the subglacier drainage system. Additionally, ringed seals and bearded seals prefer to pup on ice deep into fjords and feed in these glacial river hotspots as well. Understandably, with the habitat preference of seals close to glacial fronts, polar bears are also following this movement.
Incredible Wildlife Activity
June is prime time for wildlife encounters. Thanks to the movement of sea ice and abundance of daylight, you can even spot wildlife in the middle of the night!
- Polar Bears: Ice recedes along the coasts, and polar bears follow it, increasing your chances of sightings especially in northern Spitsbergen.
- Walruses & Seals: Walruses and various seal species haul out on ice floes, making them reliably observable during cruises.
- Birdlife Explosion: June is peak birdwatching season. Seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, auks, and kittiwakes fill the cliffs as they nest.
- Svalbard Reindeer: These year‑round residents are frequently spotted as the snow melts, making it easier for them to find food.
- Arctic Foxes: June is the height of their moulting period. You’re likely to see foxes with a scruffy, patchy mix of white winter fur and darker summer fur.
Fjords Opening Up for Exploration
While May can still present significant sea ice, limiting how far expedition vessels can travel, by June the seasonal melt has advanced enough to open waterways that were previously inaccessible. The change in sea ice allows small expedition ships to navigate deeper into Svalbard’s fjords, providing access to remote cliffs, glaciers, and wildlife hotspots.
Paired with a flexible schedule and increase in vessel manuverability, it is a priviledge to travel on a small ship that can explore further into the fjords. We can travel to places few go to and can maximize guest experience with every decision our expedition team makes. In June, the weather allows for us to truly feel like adventurers.
Hiking Season Begins
The melting snow opens up trails for easy to moderate hikes, a chance for you to see the landscape from a different perspective. Guided hikes in June offer dramatic views and lots of daylight to enjoy Svalbard to the fullest.
Hiking on shore allows for photographic opportunities and also a nice leg stretch. We can look closer at the wildflowers blooming, become knowledgeable about identifying different wildlife scat left behind, feel the soft Arctic tundra squish beneath our muck boots, and smell the spring freshness.
While June offers excellent opportunities for an expedition in Svalbard, no specific landing sites or wildlife encounters can ever be guaranteed. Animals roam freely in their natural habitat, and weather and ice conditions determine the daily plans. These unpredictable elements are part of what makes exploring Svalbard so special, every journey is unique and shaped by the Arctic itself.
