After a formal education in Forest Management and Nature Conservation, Rinie started to travel in search of wildlife. He had been attracted by the Polar Regions since his youth and made it his goal to explore the pack ice of the high Arctic Ocean.
In 1989, Rinie accepted a job on board a small ship as a potato peeler for his first season in Spitsbergen (Svalbard). After this first experience, he was hooked on the high latitudes. Since ’89, he has logged over 350 voyages, of which at least 200 in Svalbard. Other expeditions also took him to Greenland, the Canadian high Arctic, Northern Norway, Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya, the Geographical North Pole, Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falkland Island, and many islands along the Atlantic Ridge.
Polar Bear Expert
During his extensive career as an expedition guide, he has had the opportunity to study and photograph Polar Bears in their natural surroundings on many occasions. Rinie has a great passion for these magnificent animals and a broad interest in the entire Arctic sea ice ecosystem.
Author of the book The Future Polar Bear
Check out Rinie’s last published book “The Future Polar Bear: The impact of the vanishing sea ice on an Arctic ecosystem”, about the impact of declining sea ice on the ecosystem as a whole. The book also features a lot of photographs, illustrations and maps regarding the many animals impacted by disappearing sea ice, from plankton to Polar Bears.
