Snorkeling Package
For our Winter Whales of Norway expeditions we provide a complete snorkeling package, developed by our partner Waterproof International:
- Snorkeling Drysuit
- Thermal Overalls
- High Visibility Hood
- 3-finger Mittens
- Marine Boots
- Fins, Snorkel and Mask
Snorkeling Drysuit
The most important part of your snorkeling package is the drysuit. It keeps you dry in cold water and must be worn with insulating layers underneath, for which we provide thermal overalls. Our drysuits are lightweight and breathable, with a front zipper, latex neck and wrist seals, and either built-in boots or socks for separate boots. Please note that the tight seals may feel slightly uncomfortable at first.

Thermal Overalls
We provide specially designed thermal overalls to wear under your drysuit, keeping you warm while snorkeling in cold water. They are comfortable and can also be used as a windproof outer layer on deck. You need at least one or two insulating layers under these thermal overalls. Avoid turtlenecks, zippers and high collars, as they won’t fit comfortably under the drysuit. Make sure you also bring several pairs of extra warm socks!

How to choose the correct size of your Drysuit & Thermal Overalls
We only have a limited range of sizes available on board. Measure yourself precisely or ask someone to help you. Stand up straight and keep the measuring tape close to your body, write down your measurements and check the size chart. Choose the size that approximates the average of your measurements. When you are in between sizes, go one size up in order to leave some room for your thermal under layers.

A. Height
B. Hips
C. Neck to crotch
D. Shoe size
Important! If you believe our suits will not fit you, we recommend bringing your own drysuit (e.g. a rental suit). We have a very limited selection of drysuits available on board and cannot be held liable if your chosen size does not fit!

Boots, gloves and high visibility hood
In addition to the drysuit, you will wear neoprene marine boots, 7mm semidry 3-finger mittens and a neoprene hood. The bright orange hood has reflective patches for ultimate visibility in choppy sea conditions and low light. Once fully dressed, only your face will be directly exposed to the cold water.

Mask, snorkel & fins
We provide open heel fins, snorkels and masks in various sizes. If you have your own snorkel and mask, you might want to bring these to ensure you have a well-fitting set. Please note, it’s not possible to use a full-face snorkeling mask!

How to get dressed for Polar Snorkeling
1. Before you start:
- Take off all your jewellery and make sure you have short nails to prevent damage to the drysuits!
- Use the bathroom before putting on your gear. It is not possible to go to the bathroom once we are out in the zodiacs.
2. Thermalls: Put on your thermal layers and get into your warm thermal overalls.
3. Drysuit: Open the drysuit zipper completely and step in.
- Arms: Gently pull the suit up, slide your arms in and carefully insert your hands through the seals. Make sure clothes are tucked away and the seals are flat on your skin.
- Head: Bring the upper portion of the suit over your head. Reach inside the neck seal and pull it over your head gently. Remove any hair from under the neck seal and flatten it against the skin.
- Zipper: Close your drysuit by holding the top of the zipper and pulling the toggle down. Ensure the suit is sealed by completely docking the zipper.
4. Boots: Put on your boots and tighten the velcro straps (note: some of our drysuits have the boots attached to the suit).
5. Hood: Take your hood and flip it upside down, then slide the hood over your head. Tuck away your hair and fold the collar down into the neoprene neck gasket on the drysuit.
6. Gloves: Put on your gloves and zip them up.
7. Bring your mask, snorkel and fins with you in the zodiac!
⚠️ Before you go
- Make sure you have basic snorkeling experience
- You should be comfortable in the water and in good health
- Pack multiple warm layers and thick socks
- Bring slippers (slides or sandals) for when you’re taking off your wet snorkeling gear on deck. Flip-flops don’t work with socks!
- Remove all jewellery and keep nails short to avoid damaging the drysuit
- Snorkeling is always depending on weather and wildlife
