Expedition Ship Sylvia Earle
The newbuild ship Sylvia Earle is the sistership of Greg Mortimer which set sail in 2019. Both are state of the art modern expedition vessels. The Sylvia Earle is robust and powerful, yet elegantly designed with a very remarkable bow. That streamlined X-bow cuts through the ocean swell, making passages through rough polar waters quicker, less fuel consuming and more comfortable. A unique feature is the large glass atrium lounge inside the bow, with big windows that offer great views of the surrounding landscape. Something else many guests will appreciate are the heated saltwater open air swimming pool and jacuzzies on the top deck. Here you can enjoy a moment of relaxation in between landings, without having to miss any of the beautiful scenery as the ship sails on to the next location. To explore these destinations up close, Sylvia Earle carries several zodiacs which are accessible via four sea-level launching platforms. These make boarding the zodiacs very easy and safe, minimising waiting times so that you can have more time to explore. This also allows for a range of add-on activities from diving to climbing and ski touring.
The vessels streamlined design and low-pollution engines enable very high fuel-efficiency and low energy consumption. This results into an 80% reduction in emissions compared to most other engines. The Sylvia Earle also features a virtual anchoring system that can hold its position without dropping a heavy anchor. This protects the sea life on the ocean floor and prevents damage caused by conventional anchors.
The ships name pays tribute to Dr. Sylvia Earle, a highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer. She was the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and was named Hero for the Planet in 1998 by Time Magazine. Dr. Sylvia Earle will be actively involved in the development of her namesake.
Sylvia Earle is due to sail in November 2022.
