West Greenland Expedition Cruise

Spectacular Icebergs & Greenlandic Culture

Get carried away by a world of glaciers and monumental icebergs beyond your imagination during this expedition cruise into the cultural heart of Greenland.

West Greenland is often referred to as the birthplace of icebergs. The area houses some of the most spectacular glaciers, flowing down from the Greenland ice sheet into the ocean. Admire these glistening and cracking works of art as you explore on land, or get a true sense of their vastness during a zodiac cruise in the fjords. Make sure to keep an eye out for whales. The coastal waters of Greenland are a great place to spot Fin Whales, Minkes, Humpback whales and Belugas. Although once hunted to the brink of extinction, these giants of the ocean are nowadays frequently seen in the Greenlandic waters. On land, you might be able to spot polar animals like Arctic Wolves, Arctic Foxes, Arctic Hares and the majestic Muskox.

Dotted along the shores of West Greenland you will find colourful villages. Meet the locals and discover more about their daily life and ancient culture. These coastal communities form the heart of Greenland. Nowhere else in the world can you experience such incredible sceneries along with friendly local hospitality.

What we love about West Greenland

  • Spectacular glaciers & icebergs
  • Visit Ilulissat Icefjord
  • Remote coastal communities
  • Lots of options for activities
  • Dramatic landscapes

This itinerary is an example. Plans might change along the way and depending on the wildlife and weather conditions. Two things which are beyond our control. We count on your realistic expectations and your personal flexibility.

On this voyage, you might witness Inuit people practicing traditional hunting methods. This could include whaling and seal huntig, which may be confronting. Keep in mind these traditions go back for generations and take place in harmony with nature.

Day 1 & 2 | Making your way to Greenland

Having made your way to Copenhagen, you’ll catch a charter flight to Kangerlussuaq in West Greenland. Upon arrival, you will be transfered to the small port, where the ship awaits at anchor. This is where you start your expedition cruise. After you get settled in your cabin, there will be a welcome and safety briefing from the Expedition Leader. Make sure to head out on deck once the ship sails into the 160km long Kangerlussuaq fjord. This is the best place to witness the spectacular landscape of glaciers and high mountain peaks slowly passing by. Look out for icebergs in the clear blue water and keep your binoculars close to catch a glimpse of Greenland’s wildlife.

Day 3-7 | Exploring West Greenland

As the ship sails north along the west coast to your first area of exploration, you will immediately get to witness the incredible landscapes and icebergs of Greenland. The further north we venture, the smaller and more isolated the settlements become. In true expeditionary style, the itinerary for the following days will be determined by the weather conditions and sea ice. A selection of places we hope to visit:

Sisimiut is Greenland’s second city and an interesting place to explore. Even though the town is located well above the Arctic circle, people have lived here for thousands of years. Remnants of huts and camps from the first Inuit inhabitants can still be found here. The area around Sisimiut offers some great hiking trails, taking you through the town and into the mountains, where you will find spectacular panoramic viewing points. The oldest part of Sisimiut features houses dating back to 1756. One of the most famous being the Blue Church, with a gate made of whale bones. Make sure to visit the museum next to the church, the perfect place to discover the Greenland of old.

Uummannaq Fjord is one of the largest fjord systems in West Greenland. A magnificent place for kayaking among the icebergs. Potential excursions include a visit to the small town of Uummanaq which sits at the foot of a massive heart shaped mountain. There are several hiking trails leading up to mountain lakes and you might also get a chance to visit the site where the famous Greenland Qilakitsoq Mummies were discovered.

Disko Bay is a hotspot for marine life. You have good chances of spotting humpback, fin, minke and bowhead whales here. There are several exciting sites to explore in the area.

You will almost certainly visit Illulissat, one of the main reasons why visitors from all over the world come to West Greenland. Only a short walk from the harbour lies Ilulissat Icefjord, discharging 35 billion tons of ice from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier each year. The 70 km long fjord is packed with city-sized icebergs and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. We encourage you to explore Ilulissat Icefjord via one of the many hiking trails leading to some of the best vantage points.

In Qeqertarsuaq, the rich volcanic soil and the area’s mild microclimate make it much more green and lush compared to the rest of the country. During summer, a wide variety of plants and herbs grow here, and you could perhaps try some local tea made from fresh herbs. Learn about the history of the town at the museum before walking along the black sand beach towards the colourful colonial buildings.

The expedition team will schedule presentations on interesting subjects regarding Greenland’s wildlife, history, geology, ecology and climate.

Day 8 | End of your expedition in Greenland

Your voyage to Greenland comes to an end as the ship sails back into Kangerlussuaq Fjord. After saying farewell to the crew and expedition team, you will disembark in Kangerlussuaq for transfer to the airport. A charter flight brings you to Copenhagen, where you’ll spend the night in your included hotel.

The next day, you can catch your homeward flight, or decide to spend some more time exploring the city.
