Narwhal and Polar Bear Safari

This exhilarating Narwhal and Polar bear expedition is the perfect adventure for first time visitors to the Arctic as well as seasoned Arctic travellers. This adventure will take you to the northern reaches of Nunavut when the sea ice is melting and marine mammals along with other Arctic wildlife can be found travelling north along the floe edge where food is concentrated. Pods of Narwhal can be spotted resting only meters from the edge while an incredible variety of sea birds, including Thick-billed murres, kittiwakes, guillemots, and Ivory gulls, fly overhead. Polar bears and seals may also be spotted at times swimming or resting on ice packs during the 24 hours of sunlight. If you are lucky, you may also observe Bowhead and Beluga whales that also frequent visitors of the area.

Premium Safari Camp

You will stay in a modern and comfortable accommodation surrounded by the majestic mountains of Baffin Island and Bylot Island. The tents will be placed either on land or on the sea ice within Eclipse Sound, the floe edge near Pond Inlet. The safari sleeping tents are spacious and can accomodate 2 guests. At the camp there's also a large dining and sitting area with central fireplace which makes for a unique cosy experience in the middle of the wilderness.

"Narwhals are very shy. They have a sensitive nature and excellent echolocation. You can see hundreds passing by the ice edge, but when you slip into the water, you may never see one."

- Paul Nicklen on assignment with National Geographic

Activities may variate during your trip because of changing weather conditions. We try our best to provide the most unique experience for you.

  • Day 1

Your journey will start with a flight from Ottawa to Iqaluit, Nunavut. From there on you continue your journey north to Pond Inlet where you will be welcomed by your expedition leader. A stop will be made at Parks Canda for a short orientation. After this you will meet your Inuit guides and travel by qamutik (a traditional wooden Inuit sleigh with comfortable seats) and snowmobile to our Arctic Safari Camp. The duration of this ride will vary depending on the weather conditions but will include coffee and tea stops.

  • Day 3-6

Over the next few days, various excursions will be made out to the ice floe to observe wildlife and enjoy the spectacular landscapes. We hope to observe the iconic tusked narwhal as they swim past the floe edge. Other wildlife we might encounter are polar bears, bearded seals, ringed seals, walrus, bowhead whales, and beluga's. You will also have the chance to take part in various activities. Think of a snowmobile safari or a qamutik trip to traditional Inuit hunting grounds.
Migratory birds are abundant here, and the silence of the Arctic means there's a good chance you'll hear the singing before you even see them. Snorkel and kayak between sea ice and whales may be present. If the ice conditions allow it, it is also possible to visit the Bylot Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary, where 200,000 birds choose to nest each year.

  • End of the expedition

    Day 7:
After breakfast all guests leave the camp with the qamutik sleds and snowmobiles and go to Pond Inlet. From Pond Inlet you will fly to Iqaluit where you will enjoy your last evening with a cultural show of Inuit singers.

    Day 8:
After breakfast there is room to do a city tour or to explore Iqaluit yourself. After that, the departure to Ottawa follows. You will certainly fly back home with a mind full of Arctic memories.
