You can expect long landings and plenty of exploration time away from the crowds, enjoying the remoteness of Antarctica to its’ full extent. On board a small ship, you can take advantage of whatever Antarctica has to offer at any given time. There are two zodiacs which can fit all guests at the same time, so no waiting to go for a landing.

On board Hans Hansson you are literally only feet away from the water and all of its wildlife, which is great for photography from the ship. No need to jump into the zodiacs at the sight of a whale, its right there! You can easily go from one side of the ship to the other in seconds, which is very convenient when whales are passing under the ship.

Programme

The itinerary of an expedition cruise in Antarctica is never fixed. Weather conditions might require adjustments to flight departures and sailing schedule, especially when travelling on board a small ship. Bring a good portion of flexible attitude and you will have the greatest Antarctic adventure ever!

DAY 1 | Fly to Antarctica

After a night in Punta Arenas, you will embark a flight to King George Island (South Shetland Islands). The flight to Antarctica takes around two hours. Meanwhile, the ship will approach King George Island for your arrival. Once landed, you will walk approximately 2 km (1.25 miles), before embarking the ship. Zodiacs will be waiting at the shore to transfer you to your expedition ship. From here on, the Antarctic Peninsula is yours to explore!

DAY 2-13 | Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula

During your 2-week voyage, you will have plenty of time to explore the Antarctica Peninsula and South Shetland Islands in an intimate and exclusive way. Weather and ice permitting, you will visit beautiful places, some of which only small boats can enter. Each day will be different and can include zodiac tours, landings at penguin colonies, exploring historical sites or scientific bases, and even kayaking and camping. There are plenty of locations to visit along the Antarctic Peninsula. However, each expedition is different, and we can’t guarantee any specific landing sites.

Antarctica is a haven for whales and we keep our eyes open for humpbacks, orcas and minke whales. You might also spot crabeater seals, elephant seals, or maybe even leopard seals while exploring the water. Hans Hansson offers a great platform for photographing all this wildlife. The outside deck is very close to water level, a great advantage over larger ships.

The flexibility of a small ship also allows you to take full advantage of whatever Antarctica has to offer. We can stop and enjoy, not just once, but every time. The expedition team will alter the plans whenever they can to make most of the weather, wildlife and daylight. In between landings, they also offer lectures about the wildlife, geology, history and geography of the Antarctic Peninsula.

DAY 14 | Return flight from Antarctica to Chile

Every great adventure eventually comes to an end. The ship will return to King George Island for your disembarkation and flight back to Chile. Upon arrival in Punta Arenas you can join your fellow passengers for a celebration dinner.

Activities

In addition to the landings and zodiac tours, you can take part in a range of activities, free of charge! There are inflatable kayaks which guests can use anytime the conditions are good. You can also spend the night out camping on the Antarctic snow, or even take part in a science project. Muckboots are provided on board, which are good insulated rubber boots to use for landings.
