The Galápagos Islands are widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest diving destinations. Nowhere else offers the same combination of abundant marine life, dramatic volcanic scenery and opportunities to dive alongside large schools of hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, manta rays, sea lions, marine iguanas and countless other species. A diving liveaboard allows you to reach the most remote dive sites in the archipelago, including the legendary islands of Wolf and Darwin.
Why choose a Galápagos liveaboard?
The most famous dive sites in the Galápagos are located far from the inhabited islands and cannot realistically be reached on day trips. Liveaboards allow divers to spend several days exploring remote locations such as Wolf and Darwin, maximising both dive time and wildlife encounters.
In addition, a liveaboard enables early morning, sunset and night dives while eliminating long daily boat transfers. For serious divers, it is by far the best way to experience the Galápagos.
Year-round Galápagos Diving
Our Galápagos Diving liveaboards have weekly departures year round. The water is typically warmer in the northern islands at Wolf and Darwin and cooler in the western/southern/central islands of Galápagos. There are basically two seasons:
- Whale Shark Season (June-November): cooler water, 60-75°F, 15-24°C
- Manta Season (December-May): warmer and clearer water, 68-82°F, 18-28°C
Although diving is the focus of the expedition, you will also have the opportunity to explore the Galápagos ashore. These excursions provide a chance to experience the remarkable wildlife and geology that made the Galápagos famous, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, Galápagos penguins and flightless cormorants.
Sample itinerary
This is a sample itinerary. As with any expedition cruise, the daily schedule and activities are weather depending. The dive sites and excursions may change during the voyage.
Day 1 | Embarkation & Check Dive
All visitors traveling to the Galápagos must take a flight from one of mainland Ecuador’s two largest cities (Quito or Guayaquil). Due to flight schedules, this normally requires at least an overnight stay in continental Ecuador.
You will board your liveaboard in San Cristóbal. After safety briefings and equipment setup, you’ll head to Isla Lobos for a check dive. This first dive allows guests to fine-tune their equipment and get comfortable with the conditions before the adventure truly begins.
Day 2 | Wildlife Ashore & First Galápagos Dives
- 1 land visit + 2 dives
Begin the day with a landing on North Seymour Island, one of the best places in the archipelago to observe blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, land iguanas and sea lions. In the afternoon, enjoy two dives at Cousins Rock, a vibrant underwater world of volcanic walls, black corals, reef fish, rays and sea lions.
Days 3-5 | The Ultimate Galápagos Diving: Wolf & Darwin
- Day 3: 4 Dives a day at Wolf including 1 night dive
- Day 4: 4 dives at Darwin
- Day 5: 3 Dives total, 2 at Darwin and 1 afternoon dive at Wolf
Spend three unforgettable days exploring Wolf and Darwin, the most famous dive sites in the Galápagos and among the finest shark diving locations on Earth. These remote islands are renowned for their extraordinary abundance of marine life.
Expect encounters with enormous schools of hammerhead sharks, Galápagos sharks, silky sharks, eagle rays, dolphins, tuna and vast schools of fish. During the whale shark season, sightings of the world’s largest fish are common. Up to four dives per day allow you to fully experience these spectacular waters, including a night dive at Wolf Island.
Day 6 | Fernandina & Isabela
- 3 dives
Today you’ll dive the productive waters of the western Galápagos. Cape Douglas on Fernandina Island is one of the only places in the world where divers can regularly observe marine iguanas feeding underwater.
Later, explore Punta Vicente Roca on Isabela Island, a nutrient-rich site known for mola mola (ocean sunfish), sea turtles, penguins, flightless cormorants and a remarkable diversity of macro life. The scenery above water is equally impressive, with dramatic volcanic coastlines and abundant wildlife.
Day 7 | Final Dive & Giant Tortoises
- 1 dive + 1 land visit
Enjoy a final dive at Pinzón Island, where a variety of shark species, rays, tropical fish and sea lions are often encountered. In the afternoon, visit the highlands of Santa Cruz to see the iconic Galápagos giant tortoises in their natural habitat. This is one of the most memorable wildlife experiences the islands have to offer.
Day 8 | San Cristóbal - Disembarkation
After breakfast, disembark in San Cristóbal and transfer to the airport for your onward journey, taking home memories of one of the world’s greatest diving adventures.
Activities
Diving in the Galápagos
Diving in the Galápagos is best suited to experienced divers. Oceanic currents bring nutrient-rich waters that attract an extraordinary concentration of marine life, from schooling hammerheads and Galápagos sharks to whale sharks, manta rays and mola mola. These same conditions can also create strong currents, changing visibility and significant temperature variations.
We recommend at least 50 logged dives and previous experience diving in currents. Divers should be comfortable entering and exiting zodiacs in varying sea conditions. Most dives take place between 20 and 30 metres, and all diving is conducted as non-decompression diving.
Water temperatures can range from approximately 16°C to 26°C depending on season and location, making appropriate exposure protection essential.
Ship
Galápagos diving liveaboards operate year-round, with weekly departures from San Cristóbal. Standard voyages are 8 days, including up to 4 dives a day. Alternatively, you can choose a 10-night expedition with five full days diving the legendary waters of Wolf and Darwin, or extend your adventure by combining a diving liveaboard with a 7-night cruise to create a comprehensive 15-day Galápagos experience.
Please note, this is a dedicated diving live-aboard. There are no alternative activities for non-divers.
