Antarctica Fly & Cruise

The most comfortable way to explore Antarctica!

Antarctica © Yuki Davidoff

Fly over the notorious Drake Passage to King George Island where you board your ship and start your Antarctic expedition cruise. This is the most comfortable way to reach Antarctica, ideal if you want to see the highlights of the Antarctic Peninsula in a short period of time.

Fly & Cruise voyages offer an enormous advantage over regular expedition cruises by optimizing the time needed to travel to a remote place like Antarctica. By expedition ship, it will take you 2 days to reach the Antarctic Peninsula, by airplane only a few hours! It allows you to enjoy the best part of your experience, whilst avoiding the longer and sometimes uncomfortable crossing of the mythical Drake Passage.

Once on board, your expedition ship will take you along the mesmerizing Antarctic coastline, in search of suitable locations to set foot on land. Zodiacs are used for transferring you ashore and for taking you ocean-level cruising to reach those isolated sites that are inaccessible for larger ships. Endless glaciers, giant icebergs and snow-capped mountains dominate the landscape. You will be able to land directly onto the cobble and ice-strewn beaches that you will encounter along the Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition team will guide you on these outings, providing you with an up-close and personal experience of Antarctic nature.

Even though the environment is cold and harsh, Antarctica will certainly impress you with its abundance of wildlife. Opening your curtains in the morning to see seals swimming by, having a whale leap out of the water right next to your zodiac, or being overwhelmed by the sounds and smells of a bustling penguin colony. The scenes you encounter in Antarctica will create everlasting memories.

Programme

The itinerary of a Fly & Cruise Antarctica voyage is never fixed. Weather conditions might require adjustments to flight departures to avoid protracted delays. Activities may variate during your voyage and we have no control over the wildlife. The expedition team will always try their utmost to provide you with the best experience possible. Bring a good portion of flexible attitude and you will have the greatest Antarctic adventure ever!

DAY 1 & 2 - Arrive in Punta Arenas

Members of the expedition staff will welcome you at Punta Arenas airport for a transfer to the hotel. During the afternoon, all guests wil gather at the Explorers House for a briefing concerning Antarctic visitor guidelines and instructions for you flight the next day. Enjoy a welcome dinner together with your expedition mates and get excited for the upcoming adventure.

Explorers House is an exclusive facility in Punta Arenas where the expedition team helps you prepare for your voyage. You can attend briefings, try on expedition gear, practice wearing a life jacket, and learn how to board a zodiac. At Explorers House, the expedition team is available to answer any questions you may have.

Please note, passengers should arrive in Punta Arenas no later than 14.00h for the airport pick-up and transfer to the hotel.

Flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island

After a night in Punta Arenas, you will embark a flight to King George Island (South Shetland Islands). The flight to Antarctica takes around two hours. Upon arrival, you will walk approximately 2 km (1.25 miles), passing the Frei Chilean Base and the Bellingshausen Russian Base. Zodiacs will be waiting at the shore to transfer you to your expedition ship. From here on, the Antarctic Peninsula is yours to explore!

DAY 3-6 - Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula

Your expedition will take you for a discovery of the South Shetland Islands and the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, aiming for 1 or 2 outings per day. In between the shore landings and zodiac cruises, you can enjoy lectures about the Antarctic nature, wildlife and history, and enjoy the warm comfort of the ship. Every voyage is different and we can’t guarantee any specific landing sites.

Zodiac cruises take you into the fjords and icy bays in search of wildlife, like a safari on water! Antarctica is a haven for whales and we keep our eyes open for humpbacks, orcas and minke whales. You might also spot crabeater seals, elephant seals, or maybe even leopard seals while exploring the water.

Ice free patches of the land are often the best place to find penguins. They prefer higher grounds for their nests, and create penguin highways leading uphill. It’s a wonderful sight to watch their commute between the sea and the rookery. You might see chinstrap, gentoo and adelie penguins. It’s also common to find groups of seals laying on the beaches.

If the ice conditions are right, you might sail through some of the narrow Antarctic channels. Sometimes, the water can be so calm, it acts like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountains in the dark icy water.

Along the Antarctic Peninsula there are plenty more locations to visit. Every voyage is different and we hope to have as much time as possible to explore these unforgettable places.
