Cruise the Norwegian Fjords

The Norwegian coastal express Hurtigruten has been sailing for over 125 years. It is the ideal way to explore one of the world's most beautiful coastlines in a comfortabel and authentic way.
Every day, Hurtigruten ships leave from Bergen towards Kirkenes and back. During a 12-day roundtrip cruise you will cross the Arctic Circle twice, enjoy breathtaking nature along the entire route and visit 34 port towns! From small harbour towns and fishing villages to larger cities like Tromso. The places you visit during the day on the northward route are visited in the evening on the southward route and vice versa. This way you get to enjoy the best of the Norwegian coast in less than 2 weeks time.
During the winter months you have the chance to see the northern lights during these Norwegian Coast Cruises. In the summer months you can enjoy almost 24 hours of daylight, giving you plenty of time to admire the beautiful coast.
It is also possible to book a one-way voyage. These coastal cruises take 6 or 7 days and depart from Bergen towards the north, or from Kirkenes heading the south.

This is an example of a 12-day roundtrip Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back. Please note all these visits are subject to change.
Other routes, both shorter and longer trips, are also available.

  • Day 1: Embarkation in Bergen

The ship is ready for embarkation from 6 p.m. onwards. Before that, you will have the opportunity to explore the city of Bergen. Visit Bryggen with its characteristic wooden houses along the harbour, or "Gamle Bergen", the old town with white houses and red roofs, narrow alleys, etc. The Hanseatic museum or the fish market on the square are also worth a visit. If you take the Fløibaan to the 319m high city mountain, you will have a beautiful view of the city and the fjord. The journey through the Hjeltefjord begins at 8 p.m. (in the winter at 10:30 p.m.). Dinner buffet on board - in the evening an informative meeting.

  • Day 2, Florø – Molde

Between the islands, the ship sails further north to Ålesund. This is a true "Art Nouveau" gem, the most beautiful houses can be found in the Apotekergate and the pedestrian zone Kongensgate. You should not miss the view from Mount Aksla. To get here you first have to climb 418 steps! In the summer months the ship sails through the spectacular and 15 km long Geirangerfjord. The up to 800 m steep rock walls, beautiful waterfalls and lonely mountain farms are the main purpose people visit and it is the most popular photo spot in Western Norway.

  • Day 3, Kristiansund – Rørvik

The old royal city of Trondheim is certainly worth a visit. From the old city bridge "Gamle Bybrua" you have a beautiful view of the city. The wooden bridge was built in 1861 in and was once the only access to the city center. Since 1988, Norwegian crown jewels have been displayed in Nidarosdom, Norway's largest Gothic church. Also worth a visit, are the old wooden warehouses built on stilts on the water and the Stiftsgården where the royal family is staying when visiting Trondheim. After the imposing navigation through Stokksund passage, the ship moors in Rørvik in the evening.

  • Day 4, Brønnøysund – Svolvær

Early in the morning you will pass the polar circle, between Nesna and Ørnes. An imaginary line at 66º33 north latitude. In the summer months, a boat excursion to the Svartis Glacier is offered from Grønøy. Those who prefer to stay on board will sail along the impressive Børvasstinden Mountains to Bodø. In the Vestfjord, large stocks of cod are fished from the sea from January to April. Towards evening you reach Stamsund and later Svolvær, the capital of the Lofoten. The romantic beauty of Lofoten awaits you here: picturesque small fishing ports, red-painted houses - called "rorbu" - and stockfish on wooden racks.

  • Day 5, Stokmarknes – Skjervøy

At night the ship sails past Raftsund. If you have slept, you can experience this passage by day on the southern route. After a short stop in Harstad on the Vesterålen archipelago, we continue via Finnsnes to Tromsø, which we reach in the afternoon. In the "Polar Museum" and the interactive center "Polaria" you get information about the Norwegian polar expeditions. One of the largest churches in the country, the wooden cathedral church with 750 places, and the Ishav Cathedral are certainly worth a visit. The Ice Sea Cathedral is world famous for its quirky modern architecture and large glass mosaic windows. Tip: book a dog sled ride with huskies (only in winter!).

  • Day 6, Øksfjord – Berlevåg

Early in the morning you reach Hammerfest, Europe's northernmost city. King Christian VII founded the city in 1789 for his trade with Russia. From here it is only 2100 km to the north pole. The ship sails through the Magerøysund to Honningsvåg. Visit the 307 meter high North Cape plateau, rising from the ocean and located at 71º10'21 ”north latitude. Alternatively, we recommend the program with the boat excursion to Gjesværstappan, a bird sanctuary with 250,000 migratory and water birds.

  • Day 7, Båtsfjord – Kirkenes – Berlevåg

In the morning we arrive in Kirkenes. This means we have reached the turning point of the journey. In this three-country corner of Norway, Russia and Finland you can participate in a snowmobile safari (only in winter), a river trip with a visit to a Samenhut or an excursion to the Norwegian / Russian border. In the afternoon the ship moors in Vardø, the easternmost port of Norway. Then we continue from the Varanger peninsula to Båtsfjord, before arriving in Berlevåg in the evening.

  • Day 8, Mehamn – Tromsø

Hammerfest, Europe's northernmost city, was the first to install electric street lighting and in the houses. In the early morning, optional excursions are offered to the North Cape. Those who are interested in the history of the Norwegian Samen, can visit the Samen hut Mikkelgamme. Around midnight the ship will dock in Tromsø. From April to September, with 24 hours of sun, you can listen to midnight concerts in the Ice Sea Cathedral - or visit one of the many cozy pubs in the city and taste the "Arctic beer" brewed here.

  • Day 9, Tromsø – Stamsund

An excursion is made from Harstad to Trondenes and the coastal town of Sortland. In good weather, the ship makes an extra trip in the summer through the extremely narrow Trollfjord with rock walls rising high to the left and right. While the ship calls at Svolvær, the capital of Lofoten, and finally Stamsund, the majestic mountains of the Lofotenwand pass by. In the evening we leave the island group and set course to mainland.

  • Day 10, Bodø – Rørvik

This day is definitely worth getting up earlier. In the early morning we pass the colorful wings of the Helgelandoevers and pass the polar circle for the 2nd time. A varied landscape with numerous islands, mountains and waterfalls follows, including the "seven sisters" mountain range, the "bridal veil" waterfall and the famous rock island "Torghatten".

  • Day 11, Trondheim – Ålesund

Today you have the opportunity to take a look around in the beautiful coastal town of Trondheim. Along the islands of Munkholmen and Hitra the journey then goes over the open sea to Molde. The city of Kristiansund is situated in a less favorable location on the wind-ridden rocky coast on the North Atlantic Ocean. The city that was regarded as the "stockfish city of Norway" was for a long time the most important export port for these salted and dried fish.

  • Day 12, Ålesund – Bergen

Today is the last day on board. The 12-day coastal cruises end where they started, in Bergen. Hopefully you take home the memories of "the most beautiful sea voyage in the world" and the new friends you made!
